It is a holiday that commemorates the expulsion of the Greeks from Izmir and the Turkish liberation from enemy occupation. This day is attributed to the victory of the Great Offensive and the purification of the Turkish homeland from the enemy. Celebrated by government institutions every year and a national holiday of both Turkey and Northern Cyprus.
